BONANZA, a sudden source of great wealth ; term taken from the Spanish, meaning fair weather or prosperity. The first appearance of this word in the English language was in the south western United States, where the direct contact with Spanish vernacular gave rise to its application in mining terms, indicating a rich ore body or lode, especially of silver and gold. It is now applied to anything that yields a large income.
