BORDAGE. (I) A nautical term for the planking on a ship's side. (2) A feudal term for the tenure by which a certain class of unfree peasants held their cottages. A "bordar" was a peasant of this type who held a cottage and a few acres of arable land in return for customary labour services. (See VILLENAGE.)
