BOURGEOIS, a French word originally meaning a freeman of a bourg or borough; later extended to the whole class between the worker and the landed nobility, and now used generally of the capitalist class of any country.

In printing, the name of a type, in size ("nine point") between long primer and brevier. The type in which the main body of the Encyclopedia Britannica is set is bourgeois. The word, in this sense, is pronounced in English "burjoyce"; the French call type of this size gaillarde.
