BRACKET, in architecture and carpentry, a frame or struc ture often approximately triangular, the purpose of which is to sup port a projecting feature or the connection of a horizontal and a vertical member. The bracket is frequently richly decorated and when this decoration consists principally of an S-scroll, the brack et is known as a console. In furniture, a bracket is a small orna mental shelf. The word is also used of lighting fixtures upon a wall irrespective of their shape.
