BORROMINI, FRANCESCO (1599-1667), Italian archi tect, was born at Bissone on Sept. 25, He was the chief exponent of the style known in architecture as "baroque," which marked a fearless and sometimes reckless departure from the traditional laws of the Renaissance. A pupil of Carlo Maderna, he became of ter his master's death architect of St. Peter's under Bernini's direction. Borromini developed a highly decorative style. He was much employed in the middle of the 17th century at Rome. His principal works are the church of St. Agnese in Piazza Navona, the church of La Sapienza in Rome, the church of San Carlino alle Fontane, the church of the Collegio di Propaganda, and the restoration of San Giovanni in Laterano. He died by his own hand at Rome on Aug. 2, Engravings of his chief compositions are to be found in the posthumous work, Francisci Borromini o pews Architectonicum (1727).
