BINCHOIS, GILLES, an early 5th-century Flemish mu sical composer, evidently named after his birthplace, Binche, near Mons. He was esteemed by contemporary and later theo rists as second only to Dunstable and Dufay. A selection of his works is printed in Denkmdler der Tonkunst in Oesterreich (vols. vii. and xi.). Binchois died at Lille in 146o.
