BEMBERG, HERMAN ), French musical com poser, was born of French parents at Buenos Aires, and studied at the Paris Conservatoire, under Massenet, whose influence, with that of Gounod, is strongly marked in his music. His grand opera Elaine was produced at Covent Garden in 1892 and in New York in 1894. Among his songs the dramatic recitative Ballade du Desespere is well known.
