BARTLETT, JOHN RUSSELL American historical and linguistic student, was born at Providence (R.I.), Oct. 23, 1805. After a varied mercantile career he was in 1850 53 commissioner for the survey of the boundary between the United States and Mexico. As a result of this work he published A Personal Narrative of Explorations and Incidents in Texas, New Mexico, California, Sonora and Chihuahua (2 vols., 1854) From 1855 to 1872 he was secretary of State of Rhode Island, and in this capacity thoroughly rearranged and classified the State records, and prepared various bibliographies and compi lations, relating in the main to the history of the State. He is chiefly remembered, however, for his Dictionary of Americanisms (1848), a pioneer work. He died in Providence, May 28, 1886.
