BLOCK, MAURICE (1816-1901), French statistician, was born in Berlin of Jewish parents Feb. 18 1816, and died in Paris Jan. 9 1901. He settled in Paris and became a naturalized French man. Entering the ministry of agriculture in Paris in 1844, he was one of the heads of the statistical department from 1852 to 1862.
