BLOCK, MAURICE (1816-1901), French statistician, was born in Berlin of Jewish parents Feb. 18 1816, and died in Paris Jan. 9 1901. He settled in Paris and became a naturalized French man. Entering the ministry of agriculture in Paris in 1844, he was one of the heads of the statistical department from 1852 to 1862.

His principal works are:

Dictionnaire de l'administration francaise (1856) ; Statistique de la France (186o) ; Dictionnaire general de la politique (1862) ; L'Europe politique et sociale (1869) ; Traite theo rique et pratique de statistique (1878) ; Les Progres de l'economie politique depuis Adam Smith (189o) ; he also edited from 1856 L'An nuaire de l'economie politique et de la statistique, and wrote in German Die Bevolkerung des f ranzosischen Kaiserreichs (1861) ; Die Bevolke. rung Spaniens and Portugals (1861) ; and Die Machtstellung der europiiischen Staaten (1862) .
