MICHAEL BERNAYS (1834-1897), brother of the above, was born at Hamburg on Nov. 27, 1834, and died at Carlsruhe on Feb. 25, 189 7. He was a professor at Leipzig and (1873-99) at Munich. Among his principal works are: Zur Kritik and Geschichte des Goetheschen Textes (1866) • Briefe Goethes an G. A. Wolf (1868) ; Zur Enstehungsgeschichte des Schlegelschen Shakespeare (1872) ; an introduction to Hirzel's collection entitled Der junge Goethe (1875) ; a revised edition of Voss's translation of the Odyssey, etc. From his literary remains were published Schriften zur Kritik and Litteratur geschichte (1895-99) . A collection of his letters was published in 1907.
