BILGRAMI, SAYYID HUSAIN Indian statesman, a member of a well-known Mohammedan family, was educated at the Presidency college, Calcutta, and became professor of Arabic at Lucknow. In 1884 he was attached to the service of the Nizam of Berar, where he was director of education for 20 years. He helped to build up the Mohammedan Oriental college at Aligarh, which is now a university; in other ways he promoted Mohammedan interests in India, and from 1907 to 1909 was a prominent member of the India Council in London. He died on June 9. 1926.
