BRANDL, ALOIS ), Austrian scholar, was born at Innsbruck, Austria, June 21 1855: He was successively pro fessor of English literature at Prague, Goettingen, Strasbourg and Berlin. He was president of the German Shakespeare Society and from 1899 to 1918 joint editor of its Jahrbuch. He edited the reissue of the Tieck translation of Shakespeare (1897).

Brandl's chief works are:

Thomas of Erceldoune (1881) ; S. T. Coleridge and die englische Romantik (1886) ; Geschichte der alt englischen Literatur and die englische Volkspoe,rie (1892-1908) ; W. Shakspeare (1894) ; Quellen des weltlichen Dramas in England vor Shakspeare (1898) ; and the valuable Geographic der alt-englischen Dialekte (1915).
