BRATTLEBORO, a village of Windham county (Vermont), U.S.A., on the Connecticut river in the south-eastern part of the State, eight m. from the Massachusetts border. It is served by the Boston and Maine and the Central Vermont railways. The population in 1930 was 8,709. It is an attractive village, situated in a hilly, heavily wooded country, and has some houses dating from the 18th century. There are numerous and varied manu factures. The village was settled about 1753, and was named after William Brattle (1702-1776), a Massachusetts loyalist, one of the original patentees. It was incorporated in 1763.
