BRIGHOUSE, municipal borough, West Riding, Yorkshire, England, 51m. N. of Huddersfield by the L.M.S. Railway, on the river Calder. Population (1931) It has large woollen and worsted factories. Much of the machinery and many tools used in the textile industry are made locally. Iron founding, especially moulding, quarry working and chemical dye mixing are pursued. The town was incorporated in 1893 and is governed by a mayor, eight aldermen and 24 councillors. Brighouse is in the Elland parliamentary division of Yorkshire (West Riding). Area of municipal borough, 2,231 acres.
