BURTON, SIR FREDERICK WILLIAM Irish painter and art connoisseur, and for 20 years director of the National Gallery in London. He was responsible for a large number of important purchases for the collection, among them Leonardo da Vinci's "Virgin of the Rocks," Raphael's "Ansidei Madonna," Holbein's "Ambassadors," Van Dyck's equestrian por trait of Charles I., and the "Admiral Pulido Pareja," by Velas quez; and he added largely to the noted series of Early Italian pictures. He died in Kensington on March 16, 1900.
