CALYPSO, in Greek mythology, daughter of Atlas (or Oceanus, or Nereus), a nymph of the mythical island of Ogygia. She entertained Odysseus (q.v.) seven years, but could not over come his longing for home even by a promise of immortality ; at last Hermes was sent by Zeus to bid her release him. In several later (Italo-Greek) stories, she bore Odysseus a son Auson, or Latinus. (Homer, Odyssey, i. 50, v. 28, vii.
