CAMEO, a term commonly applied to engraved work executed in relief on hard or precious stones, as well as to imitations of such stones in glass, called "pastes," and on the shells of mol luscous animals. The cameo is therefore the converse of the in taglio (q.v.), which consists of an incised or sunk engraving in the same class of materials. (See GEM and GEMS IN ART.)
