CAMPULUNG, the capital of the department of Muscel, Rumania, and seat of a suffragan bishop; situated among the out lying hills of the Carpathian mountains on the river Tirgului, a tributary of the Arge. Pop. Csmpulung is a popular summer resort. The Tirgului supplies water-power for several paper-mills; annual fairs are held on July 20 and Oct. ao; and there is a considerable traffic with Transylvania and with the south by a branch railway to Ploe$i. A German colony was established at Campulung in the 12th century but could not be maintained. Afterwards it was for a short time the first capital of Wallachia. The monastery and cathedral claim to have been founded by the Voivode Radul Negru in the 13th century.
