CANOPUS, the second brightest star in the sky, situated in the constellation Carina. It is in S. Dec. 53° and therefore invis ible from latitudes above 37° N. It is an F type star of magnitude —0.9. No sensible parallax has been detected, and there is no in direct method of measuring its distance. It must certainly be one of the most luminous and massive stars, but much still remains to be learned about it.
