CANYON, an anglicized form of the Spanish word canon, signifying a valley with high cliff-like sides, such as are found in the western parts of the United States and in Mexico. A few of the more notable examples in the United States are the Grand Canyon (q.v.) of the Colorado; the Canyon of the Yellowstone, in Yellowstone National park ; and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, in Colorado.
