CAPTION, a term still used in law, especially Scots, for arrest or apprehension. The term also has an old legal use, to sig nify the part of an indictment or document, etc., which shows where, when, and by what authority it is taken, found or executed ; so its opening or heading. From this is derived the modern sense of the heading of an article in a book or newspaper. In Scotland a process caption is a summary warrant for the incarceration of a party who has borrowed and refused to return, or who has with out authority taken away, documents in the custody of the court.
