CARBONDALE, a city in the anthracite fields of Lacka wanna county (Pa.), U.S.A., amid beautiful mountain scenery near the upper end of the Lackawanna river valley, 16m. N.E. of Scranton. It is on Federal highway io6 and is served by the Dela ware and Hudson, the Erie and the New York, Ontario and West ern railways. The population in 192o was 18,640, 2,813 foreign born white; 193o, 20,061. Its primary industry is coal-mining, but it also has railway shops, tanneries and manufactures of silk, cut glass, boilers, tanks and chemicals. The output of its factories in 1925 was valued at $4,240,419. Carbondale was settled in 1824 and was chartered as a city in 1851.
