CARINATAE, the name often given in contradistinction to Ratitae (q.v.) to a large section of birds, including all the mod ern flying forms except the tinamous, on account of the keel like process on the breast-bone. The terms are now commonly replaced by Palaeognathae (= Ratitae) and Neognathae (= Cari natae).
