CARNIOLA, a former duchy and crownland of Austria which centred round the town of Laibach (Ljubljana), on a feeder of the Save and in a fertile basin. With the foundation of the Serb, Croat and Slovene State, Carniola ceased to exist as a terri torial unit, being merged in Slovenia. (See YUGOSLAVIA.)
