CAROL II. (1893— ), king of Rumania, was the eldest son of king Ferdinand and queen Marie of Rumania, and became crown prince on the death of his grandfather, Carol I., in 1914• In 1921, after the dissolution of a morganatic marriage he married the princess Helen, daughter of Constantine, king of the Hellenes; and the issue of this marriage was prince Mihai (b. Oct. 25, In 1925 crown prince Carol, having eloped with Mme. Lupescu, renounced his rights of succession so that on death of king Ferdi nand in 1927, the young prince Mihai was proclaimed king under a regency. Prince Carol's marriage with the princess Helen was dissolved in 1928. After a short residence in England and France, prince Carol returned to Rumania and was proclaimed king on June 8, 1930.
King Carol has one brother, prince Nicholas (b. 1903) ; and three sisters, Elisabeth (b. 1894; m. 1921 to George II., ex-king of the Hellenes) ; Marie (b. 19oo; m. 1927 to Alexander I., king of Yugoslavia) ; and Ileana (b. 1909; m. 1931 to the archduke Anton of Austria-Tuscany).
