CARTERET, a borough of Middlesex county, New Jersey, U.S.A., 5 m. S. of Elizabeth; served by the Central railroad of New Jersey. Pop. (5920) 11,047 (46% foreign-born white, the majority from Austria and Hungary) ; 1930, Federal census, It has important industries, notably the refining of metals and the manufacture of iron, steel, fertilizer and chemicals. Car teret was founded (under the name of Roosevelt, later changed in honour of Philip Carteret, the first governor of the colony) in 1906 and incorporated in 1907.
