CAMPBELL, JOHN (1708-1775), Scottish man of letters, was born at Edinburgh on March 8, 1708, and died on Dec. 28, He was the author of Lives of the British Admirals (4 vols., 1742 and 1744) ; the Military History of Prince Eugene and the Duke of Marlborough (1736) ; and a Political Survey of Britain (2 vols., 1744) ; and of many contributions to works of reference. Campbell was agent for Georgia 0765-75).
