CAMPER, PETER , Dutch anatomist and nat uralist, was born at Leiden on May 11, 1722. He was educated at the university there, and in 1746 graduated in philosophy and medicine. He was successively professor at Franeker (175o), Amsterdam ('755) and Groningen (1763) . In 1787 he was nominated to a seat in the council of state, and died at the Hague on April 7, 1789.
The most important of Camper's works on comparative anat omy were published in 3 vols. at Paris in 1803, under the title 'Euvres de P. Camper qui ont pour objet l'histoire naturelle, lca' physiologie, et l'anatomie comparee. His Dissertation physique sur les differences reelles que presentent les traits du visage etc. was published in 1781 both in Dutch and in French. (See also ANATOMY. )
