CALLAGHAN, SIR GEORGE ASTLEY British admiral, was born in London on Dec. 21, 1852, the son of an army captain, and entered the navy in 1866. He was promoted captain while on service on the China station in 1894, and was then (1894-97) naval adviser to the inspector of fortifications at the War Office. He was in command of the "Endymion" on the China station at the time of the Boxer rising in 1900, and com manded the naval brigade which entered Peking. He held various other important commands in the years 1900-14 and for the three years immediately before the World War was commander-in chief of the home fleets, which he brought to a high state of efficiency and readiness. Callaghan was commander-in-chief at the Nore tJan. 1915–March 1918), and was promoted admiral of the fleet in 1917. He died in London on Nov. 23, 192o.
