CATANZARO, a town and episcopal see of Calabria, Italy, capital of the province of Catanzaro, 1,125ft. above sea-level. Pop. (1930 26,976 (town) ; 41,888 (commune). The station for the town (Catanzaro Sala) is on a branch connecting the two main lines along the east and west coasts of Calabria, 6m. N. by W. of Catanzaro Marina on the east coast, and 20m. E. of S. Eufemia Biforcazione, on the west coast line. The town enjoys a comparatively cool climate in summer, and commands fine views. Numerous wealthy families reside here, and the town is clean and well built.
