One of the branches of this high way extends to Guayama and another to Salinas, both on the Caribbean. On account of its healthy climate the Spanish rulers established a military post here; the Americans succeeding them used it as a United States army post, and it is now a sub-post of the 65th Regiment of the regular army. The United States naval communication service has a high-power station at Cayey (also available for the use of other branches of the Federal Gov ernment) for direct communication with Washington and with Balboa in the Canal Zone. The town is well built, with water works, electric light, hospitals and. schools. It is the centre of a region where tobacco and coffee of superior quality are produced, and has many warehouses and factories.
