CHAMBER SYMPHONY, a musical composition written for a small orchestra exceeding in numbers the largest of the ordinary chamber music combinations (octet or nonet) but not approaching those of a full orchestra, and confined usually to a single instrument in each class. Such a work is Franz Schreker's Kammersymphonie for 23 solo instruments; another has been written by Schonberg.
