CHAPEL HILL, a town of Orange county, North Carolina, U.S.A., on a high ridge 28m. N.W. of Raleigh, in a tobacco and cotton-growing district. It is on Federal highway 15, and is served by the Southern railway. The population in 193o was 2,699. It is the seat of the University of North Carolina (q.v.), which occupies a beautiful campus of io6ac. and owns an adjoining tract of 5ooac. in forest lands. The town has a council-manager form of government.
