CHEVE SYSTEM. A method of teaching music to children in wide use in France. It is somewhat akin to the Tonic Sol-fa system, being based, like that, on the principle of a movable tonic, as opposed to the older "fixed Do" method, but employs numerals for the written signs of the different notes instead of the sol-fa syllables, although the latter are retained for vocal pur poses. The system was invented by a French mathematical pro fessor, Pierre Galin (1786-1821) ; developed and advocated by one of his followers, Aime Paris (1798-1866), and perfected and popularized, after much controversy and opposition, by the latter's brother-in-law, Emile Joseph Maurice Chevy (1804-64) .
