CHILWA (incorrectly SHIawA) , '5° 15' S., 35° 40' E. ; a shallow lake of brackish water in the Nyasaland Protectorate abutting on Portuguese East Africa. Its area varies with the rainfall, but never exceeds zoo sq. miles. Formerly, at a period of higher level, the lake appears to have drained northward to the Lujenda branch of the Rovuma.
