CHARDIN, JEAN SIM.EON (1699-1779), French genre painter, the son of Jean Chardin, master-carpenter, was born in Paris on Nov. 2, 1699, and died Dec. 6, 1779. He became famous for his still-life pictures and domestic interiors, which are well represented at the Louvre, and for figure-painting, as in his Le Benedicite (1740) and is acknowledged as one of the greatest colourists of the French school. Many of his most notable pic tures are in the collection of Baron Henri de Rothschild. .
