CHAUX DE FONDS, LA, an industrial town in the Swiss canton of Neuchatel, about 19m. by rail N.W. of Neuchatel, at a height of about 3,25oft. in a valley of the same name in the Jura. Pop. mainly Protestant (27,306) and French speaking; of the Catholic faith, the majority are "Old Cath olics." It is a centre of the watch-making industry. There are schools of watch-making and of industrial art.
