COCYTUS (Gr. ko-kii-tos, anglicized ko-si'tus), a tributary of the Acheron, which flows into the Ionian sea about nom. N.
of the Gulf of Arta ; identified with a tributary of the Acheron or of the Styx, a river in Hades (cp. Virgil's Aeneid, vi. 132). The etymology suggested is from KceKbetv, to wail, in allusion to the cries of mourners ; this is probably a reduplicated form, akin to Skt. cry, with intensive kokuyate.
