CLAVIERS, ETIENNE 735-1793 ) , French financier and politician, was born in Geneva on Jan. 27, 1735. He was a political refugee in England, and in 1789 went to France, where he assisted Mirabeau on the Courrier de Provence and in the prep aration of his speeches. Claviere also published some pamphlets under his own name, and through these and his friendship with J. P. Brissot, whom he had met in London, he became minister of finance in the Girondist ministry, from March to June 12, 1792. After Aug. I o he was again given charge of the finances in the provisional executive council. He shared in the fall of the Giron dists, and was arrested on June 2, On receiving notice (Dec. 8) that he was to appear on the next day before the revolutionary tribunal, he committed suicide.
