CLINCHANT, JUSTIN (182o-1881), French soldier, was born at Thiaucourt (Meurthe) on Dec. 24, 182o, and died in Paris on March 20, 1 88 I . He entered the army from St. Cyr in 1841. He served in Algeria (1847-5 2) , in the Crimea (18 5) , and in Mexico. He held a brigade command in 187o, was captured at Metz, but escaped, and was placed in command of the loth Corps of the Army of the East. He was under Bourbaki during the campaign of the Jura, and when Bourbaki attempted to commit suicide he succeeded to the command (Jan. 23, 1871), only to be driven with 84,00o men over the Swiss frontier at Pontarlier. In 1871 Clinchant commanded the 5th Corps operating against the Commune. He was military governor of Paris when he died.
