COMMON GOOD, in Scotland, the name of ancient cor porate property owned by the royal burghs and held by them for the communal benefit of their citizens. These properties consist for the most part of land and buildings. The communal funds derived from the Common Good are spent upon objects to which expenditure out of rates cannot be applied. Thus, the Royal Observatory at Edinburgh, an institution of much distinction, is maintained out of the Common Good.
