COODE, SIR JOHN (1816-1892), English engineer, was born at Bodmin, Cornwall, on Nov. II, 1816, the son of a solicitor. In 1847 he was appointed resident engineer at the national har bour works at Portland then in progress, and i. 1856 engineer-in chief, a post which he occupied till the completion of the works in 1872. His advice was sought by many of the colonial govern ments, especially by those of South Africa and Australia, and by the Indian government. After the Portland harbour his best known work is the harbour of Colombo, Ceylon. He was made a K.C.M.G. in 1886. From 1884 till his death he was a member of the Suez Canal Commission, and was president (1889-91) of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He died at Brighton on Mar. 2, 1892.
