DALRYMPLE, ALEXANDER (173 , British hydrographer, was born on July 24, 1737, at New Hanes, near Edinburgh. In 1752 he sailed for Madras in the service of the East India company. After a voyage of observation to the Eastern Islands in I 759 he attempted unsuccessfully to open up trade with Sulu and Canton. His activities during these years are indicated by the titles of his publications: An Account of the Discoveries in the South Pacific Ocean Before 1764 (I 76 7) ; Historical Col lection of South Sea Voyages (2 vols., 17 7o) ; Collection of Charts ( I 7 7 2) ; Historical Relation of the Several Expeditions from Fort Marlborough to the Islands off the West Coast of Sumatra 0775). In 1779 Dalrymple became hydrographer to the East India com pany, and from 1795 to 1808 held the same office to the Ad miralty. He died in London on June 19, 1808.
