CRATER, the cavity at the mouth of a volcanic duct, usually funnel-shaped or presenting the form of a bowl, whence the name, from the Gr. K par; a bowl. (See VOLCANO.) Also the cavity in the carbon (or electrode) of an arc light. When an alternating current is employed, a crater is formed in both electrodes.
