DALMAN, GUSTAF (1855– ), German theologian and orientalist, was born at Niesky, Silesia, on June 19, 1855. He became professor at Leipzig in 1895 and at Halle in 1900. From 1902 to 1917 he was director of the German Evangelical Institute for Archaeology in Jerusalem, and for the next five years pro fessor at Greifswald. His chief publications are Christus ins Tlralnzud (1891, Eng. trans. 1893 ) ; Gramntatik des jiidiscli palastinisclaen Aramaisch (1894) ; Aramaisch-neulaebr˘isclaes Wor terbucli (189 7-1901) ; u'orte Jesu (1898, Eng. trans. 190 2) ; Petra U. seine Felsheiligtumer (1908) ; Orte u.
