CUYPERS, PETRUS JOSEPHUS HUBERTUS (1827 1921), Dutch architect, was born on May 16, 1827, at Roermond, Holland. He studied under Viollet-le-Duc, and was inspired both by the Gothic and the Netherland style of the i6th century in building the Rijks Museum at Amsterdam (1877-85) and in re storing and rebuilding many Roman Catholic churches, town halls and other buildings. His chief merit, however, was that he awak ened the interest of his countrymen in architecture and the deco rative arts, and so prepared the way for Berlage, de Bazel and others, who created the modern Dutch style of architecture. Cuy pers received honorary degrees from the universities of Utrecht and Delft. He died on March 3, 1921.
