DERAIN, ANDRE ), French painter, was born at Chatou (France), on June io, 1880. For a considerable time he shared a studio with the landscape painter Vlaminck; he then made the acquaintance of Picasso, Georges Braque and the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. It was from this small group that Cubism developed. Yet Derain cannot be considered as a representative of the Cubist school; his best works adhere to the great tradi tions of the classic landscapes, and are formal in character and restrained in colour, while his figures exhibit a grandeur and serenity, which reveal an admirer of the great masters.
