DIABOLO, a game played with a sort of top in the shape of two cones joined at their apices, which is spun, thrown, and caught by means of a cord strung to two sticks. The idea of the game appears originally to have come from China. In 1812 it became popular in France under the name of "le diable." In 1906 Gus tave Phillipart, a French engineer, devised a top with a double cone and, for a short period, the game was extremely popular in France and England.
