DIAZ DEL CASTILLO (c. 1492–c. 1593), Spanish sol dier and author, was born at Medina del Campo. In 1514 he vis ited Cuba and five years later accompanied Cortez to Mexico where he died. He is known chiefly by his True Account of the Discovery of New Spain (3 vols., 163 2 ; critical edition by Garcia, Mexico, 1904; Eng. trans. by Maudslay, 3 vols., 1908).
