DORIC ORDER, in architecture, the simplest and earliest perfected of the Greek orders, adopted and developed in a modi fied form by the Romans, characterized by a simple, moulded capital, and the existence in the frieze of upright, grooved forms, known as triglyphs separated by squares, known as metopes (see ORDER) .
